Dark Elf tactics?

Post by Warlord Solskritt on Sun May 11, 2008 9:08 pm

Hey guys! Was wondering if any of you have any tactics, tips, or advice you could give me for playing Dark Elves. Thanks in advance for the replies!

have you checked out druchii.net? they have a bunch of great tactica articles, especially on MSU (multiple small units), which were really interesting, even for an O&G player haha

Dark Elves need to be fast, even your infantry need to be fast. Your squishy and your overall shooting (repeater crossbows) doesn't do alot of damage.

I've noticed overall with Dark Elves as well is that your troops for the most part tend to dish out a large amount of str 3 attacks (cosairs and witches come to mind). In this respect, I'd reccomend making your characters able to dish out the High str attacks to counter the bigger stuff your going to face.

Thats my reccomendation, get into combat ASAP with your infantry, shoot down anything that threatens your flanks with the repeaters (crossbows and bolt throwers) and then bring the calvary and/or chariots in for the kill.

War Hydras are also nasty, IMO.

MSUs (multiple small units) with a lot of feinting and counter-charging. You are a relatively elite army with few things that can dish out a lot of scary damage (as Dan mentioned -- mostly S3 attacks). Elves in general are not a meat grinder type of army, so you have to be selective on how you sacrifice units, which you will have to do. Learn to use your extra movement to move around the flanks of your opponent. Learn to use small (expendable units -- meaning naked, no upgrades or command section) to turn your opponent, exposing his flanks...the art of fleeing...the art of preparing an over-run (your opponent's, so that you can get a favorable counter charge)...user your Dark Riders to march block, to harass the edges of your opponent's army, shooting at his weaker units, or charging his warmachines, use them to feint (flee from a charge, putting your opponent out of position), all these things work well for Dark Elves...you have strong magic (+1 to cast) and Reaper Bolt Throwers, which can dish out damage at distance. Other than that...it'll come down to maneuver, maneuver, maneuver...

At the end of the day, Elves in general and the Dark Elves in particular, are relatively expensive (for their abilities), made of paper, and have little or no armor. Dark Elves do have strong magic, Bolt Throwers, a couple good monsters (a Beastmaster on a Manticore is a good combo, plus the aforementioned Hydra), move faster than most armies, and tend to have better stats then the average army, so can be quite challenging to play (with and against)
