Tournament proposal

Post by jhope on Fri Jun 03, 2011 10:21 am

Joel has been asking me to set up a tournament, so since we had 6 guys at Sunshine last night we had a quick discussion.

These are some of the ideas that I/we thought might work.

1. Decide finishing positions using win-loss records and points to decide a tie.

2. Play with smaller armies so that we can play more games. I think this will take some testing to see how it goes. (Some may be playing this Sunday and next Thursday with this format.)

- use 875 pt armies for a mid war battle. (half the normal 1750)
- use half the board. Not sure which battles would be best for this.
- No more than 1 1/2 hours for a game. May be less so that we can get enough games in.
- Play 5 games instead of 3.

3. I want to play and so does my son, so hopefully nobody has a problem with that. I'd like Cesar to help with rule decisions, especially involving myself or my son.

4. We'll do this on a sunday after I sort out when is the best date and hopefully we can make this a regular thing.

I've only played in two tournaments, so if anyone with more experience wants to step up and help or run things, please do so. Let me know what you guys think?

I like this idea a lot. I say next Thursday we come with 875pt lists and see how long games actually take.

Also what's the plan for table size split down the middle 3x4?

I think we just split them right down the middle. We can use masking tape (if safe for table), roads, etc to divide them.

I like the sound of this. Though I think using 4x4 boards will probably be the easiest solution. I'm gonna try to swing by next Sunday for a game.

I like the idea of 4/4 boards however. I think 875 pts is to low. Unless you are considering dropping the requirements for combat platoons to 1 rather than the standard 2. In essence you would be playing combat patrol requirements. I suggest that we play with 1000 or 1200 pts. I think a game could be played in an hour and a half that way. In July, I am going to have some free time. I would like to participate in something like this or another tournament like we did last year that Kingdom ran. It was the 3 week tournament where we played once a week. Either way I am down for some gaming. Just my 2 cents.

Would like to here from the guys that played this weekend. The 4 x 4 board might be better than just using half (3x4).

The 600 point battle rules use one combat platoon. That's probably the best way to go to give everyone some flexibility in their armies.

After today's games taking a lot longer than expected I was thinking about limiting the number to turns maybe we can say you have 6 turns or and hours and a half to get it done.

thoughts?

I think we should scrap the 875 idea. We all brought infantry, so it didn't save any time. I think Tom and I took longer. We could test out 600 points next week if someone wants to.

I'm thinking 1750 late war in about 2.5 to 4.5 weeks with the usual rules. One exception is that we decide things on wins. I'll come up with a date this weekend.

Yea I say we give 600pts a try next week.
Also I was listing to the WWPD podcast and they were talking about a 1000pt late war tourney. I'm thinking it gives room for one toy and with better firepower of latewar things may die faster. The tourney had one and a half hour rounds and they said they all finished on time. We can obviously try both ideas.

I'll be there with my today(6/12). Probably around 12:30.

I'll do 1750 or a 600 point battle. He can do the same.

I talked with Joel today to sort out a date for the tournament. The best day looks to be Sunday, July 10th.

I still need to set a point level for the tournament. This week we can see how playing with 600 point mid war and half the table works out. I played one free-for-all game with my son and it took a bit over an hour. Right now I would go with 1750 late war until we know the 600 point battles will work out.

I played a 600 pt Finnish armor list against a soviet infantry list today on a 4x4 board and finished in just about an hour. I got creamed though and need to work on my list Smile

To much! They where fearless conscripts and had 2 infantry companies w/ 1 platoon each. 1 w/ smgs and 1 w/ rifle/Mgs. light tank Platoon w/ 5 t-70s and a heavy mortar platoon with 4 guns. Ya... I had 2 recce smg platoons with 5 stands each and 5 t-26s. I took out the tank platoon but his infantry was just to much.

Ouch soviets really are the x-factor. Can you take light morters to pin the soviets?

I had no problem pinning him. The smg platoons hitting on 2+. But no, sadly I can't fit in any mortars.

If you doing a Nats. Qualifier on July 17th , then I probably don't need to bother with the tournament on July 10th.
