Infinity Board Projects

Post by ShadowMaster on Sun Apr 24, 2011 8:40 am

So with our new Infinity craze, I've been thinking about how to create a game board without going broke.
I do not have the terrain to do this now, and what I do have is not Sci Fi themed.

I keep going back to the old 40k board from the Silver Dragon. It was terrain heavy, had great verticle depth, and had that awesome toxic river.

I'm going to PM Keith to see if he can share the step and some tips to making one of those.
I'd like this to be a collaberation thread - so if anyone has any input please throw it in here.

@Kyle - what are the dimentions of the typical 300 point game board? With weapon ranges, 4x4 seems small, but a full 6x4 warhammer table seems huge for 20 minis.

Here is the terrain that Jerry provided to Mike. I think this has alot of good elements.

I'm curious as to what some of these are.
@Jerry - can you explain what we have here. I see some 40k structure that I recognize. Are those Armorcast pieces? JR Miniatures Sci-Fi or Steampunk lines? Did you scratch build some of that?

The suggested dimensions are 4x4 or 6x4 played lengthwise. It does seem large, but it showcases the range of snipers and hmg's ;and, would make infiltration, to camo, and combat dropping much more important.

They don't really give a set table length as the game doesn't really have much in the form of scenarios, but 4x4 is pretty popular. 6x4 is playable because of the ranges but it can be a pain in the butt to play on such a large board because it often feels much more stand off ish. We usually always play on 4x4 with lots of terrain. At 6x4 it just requires so much terrain and stuff like snipers just own even more when they pretty much already are like the best units in the game usually.

Buildings are obviously a very useful terrain feature to have. I will often whip out the GW city terrain sets and mix with lot of other things that could fit a sci fi setting.

Hmmm...
I'm trying to think of suggestions that might prove useful.

One thing I can think of is that if you go the modular route treat building the board kind of like you would building a warhammer fantasy unit. When you lay out a new section do next to one you already made so that like the unit everything ranks up well. Narrow alleys between buildings is great, but you don't want them several to end up too narrow for anyone to bother using them.

Thing to remember is that you want lots of concealing terrain, lot of things look nice, but a figure has very few places to be that put it out of LOS. Grated pillars or lots of openings on things are not going to be that useful in Infinity. Solid terrain is something you will want a good amount of.

Thanks for the input all!

The problem I have now is my terrain is all really see through. I've been working on some fantasy pieces to actually BLOCK line of site.

This will be the sci-fi version of the project.

At the moment, I think I'll build 4-6 pieces which will work on my GW Battleboard. I agree that this needs to be THICK and maze like - thus I'm gonna need some cheap supplies.

Here is the terrain I've been using (before jerry gave me some stuff).
Infinity board by frantic8@bellsouth.net, on Flickr

Joel has a board set with some urban/sci-fi type terrain. It isin't painted up yet. I think ziteredes or something like that makes it. Maybe I will volunteer to paint them. They would be perfect.

That looks like a great start, but still very open. I'm picturing something way more urban.

I think if you add in what Jerry gave you you'll have a good Infinity setting.

Thats a pretty good set up Frantic, lot of blocking terrain. A bunch of open avenues one would need to cross to get to different places but at the same time going too heavy on terrain in infinity can skew things in the opposite direction with ranged weapons greatly nerfed in favor of the sneaky units.

Those are from AT-43. Lot of us who collected that game have tons of them because they used to give you one with each vehicle you purchased.

All the AT-43 terrain was great, especially those bunker kits with the removable roofs. Got a ton of the stuff and use it for lot of different games. Got a big box of those shipping containers too heh.

I pulled out my copy of GW's old Terrain book (the one from the mid 90's).
Material they list in that book are:
Thin card - like the kind that use in most forms of packaging for almost any product
Thick card - like the type from delivery & packing boxes
Balsa wood
Cork tiles/Cork board
Corks
Toothpicks/Cocktail sticks
Styrofoam - the heavier stuff used in packaging of electronics or short term insulation for perishable goods
Sand - various types
Straws - especially the bendable kind (warning... sometimes those don't hold paint well... I know)
Modelling clay - (persoanlly I prefer the DAS kind)
Cardboard tubes - like those from paper towel rolls, or heavier stuff like Pringles tubes or Quaker Oats containers
Plastic card/sheets
Spackle
String
Thin metal wire
Plastic sprues - like the ones your GW models come on
Wire mesh - apparently you can pick that up from pet stores

I also scanned in a few of the pages
https://redcdn.net/ihimizer/img25/6020/terrainarticles1.jpg
https://redcdn.net/ihimizer/img132/7297/terrainarticles2.jpg
https://redcdn.net/ihimizer/img546/599/terrainarticles3.jpg
https://redcdn.net/ihimizer/img861/2333/terrainarticles4.jpg
https://redcdn.net/ihimizer/img846/2934/terrainarticles5.jpg

Hopefully those will give you a few ideas.
One of the biggest things is to just look around at stuff and see what you could turn into terrain.
Soda cans and bottles along with pringles tubes make for great industrial looking containers.

THANKS KEITH

I've went scavaging in everyone's garage yesterday.
Got some sweet old electronics I think I can use for some things.

On a sad note - my brother ebay'ed our old HO scale Tyco train for a lousy $60. Sometimes I could just smack him!

BTown swaped some unneeded O&G for a bunch of terrain parts, including 5 AT-43 containers, LoTR Ruins, and something from the Starship trooper game.
Also sold my WoC and used some funds for the chemical plant and a few other parts I found too neat to not use.

Picked up some Plasticard and Pringles today from Tate's and started to execute this project (Thx again for the scan Keith):

It was pretty easy to follow, I think it's coming along pretty nice.
