Since many of us use this place to swap stuff from time to time, I want to share something I recently learned the hard way.......
BarterTown is completely unsafe (unless they go first, hard when your a new user)
Basicly you have zero recourse if something goes wrong
The admins can't do more than make a post and ban the user. Sure they'll yell fraud alot, but......
The police can't help because it is a civil matter
The mail fraud people can't help because "no crime has been committed" (it's a civil matter)
The internet fraud people can't help because all your proof is based on internet board communications using alias. You need IP tracking which would require an FBI warrent to get; however, to get the warrent requires more evidence first. Plus these departments have bigger fish in the form of $1million ponzy schemes to fry than to care about your $50 in lost toys.
To follow up in civil court requires $200 in court fees up front just to file the law suit.

Ouch..you got burned bad Bill ? I've used Bartertown for arround 9 years now and never had any problems.
Is a totally based on trust though, there really no guarantees, i guess ive been lucky so far in my trades.

I've been using Bartertown for a loooong time, and so far have only had one case of someone ripping me off. However, I contacted the police in their home state, and an officer actually looked into it, found out the culprit, and got them to refund me the money.
So it's possible. Some cops are awesome.
