Eldar Hornet

Post by The Eldar Guy on Mon Nov 15, 2010 2:56 pm

Thinking about picking up 3-4 of these: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/ELDAR-HORNET.html Certainly go better with my army than war-walkers. Everything mobile.

Rules here: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/h/hornetexp.pdf

Also thinking about these alternate rules (boredom), and was wondering if there was any opinion:

Hornet.............................................................60pts

BS: 3
Armor: F 11, S 11, R 10

Unit Comp: 1-3 Hornets
Unit Type: Vehicle (Fast, Skimmer)

Special Rules: Scout, Maneuverable, Concentrated Fire

Wargear: 2 Shuriken Cannons

Weapons: Each Hornet may exchange 1-2 weapons:
Scatter laser..........................................+5 points each
Starcannon..........................................+10 points each
Eldar missile launcher...........................+10 points each
Bright lance.........................................+15 points each Same cost of an IG russ Las Canon sponson
Pulse laser...........................................+20 points each 5pts less than a BS4 storm raven typhoon missile launcher

Options: Any hornet may be ungraded with the following:
Holo-fields..................................................+30 points
Vector Engines........................................+10 points
Spirit stones............................................+10 points
Star Engines............................................+10 points

Maneuverable: The light tank is employed for reconnaissance and raiding, and is often used for hit and run tactics. A vehicle with this special rule may always make a 6" move during it's Assault Phase unless immobilized.

Concentrated Fire: The vehicle's computer systems are adapted to fire on a single target and let loose with all of it's fire power. As long as the Hornet is armed with two of the same weapons, the Hornet can opt to fire both as a single twin-linked weapon. This counts as only firing one weapon.

Got it from some random dude's blog.

I liked "Concentrated Fire" in particular. Its not as big as the Dark Eldar's vehicles that 'move 12" and fire an additional weapon'. Instead of doubling the fire rate it instead marginally increases accuracy.

If anything I'll use them as count-as WarWalkers, but people around here often play with forgeworld for regular games. I don't' mind the Forgeworld experimental rules.

Too bad no one brings that stuff to our store. I wouldn't mind and I am sure others wouldn't either. BTW, secretly building and painting Necron army on the side. Will be getting tomb stalkers from FW for Xmas too!

Isn't a wave serpent cheaper? These models are also to small to proxy as a wave serpent. Remember when proxying, at least be sure that the footprint or base is the same as the original. Only army to get leeway on this is usually Orks.

I like the models. The rules with the points make that unit incredibly OP. Let's hope GW makes something similar for the next codex. Only thing is I'm maxed on points in my army with 10 vehicles and I have no idea what I'd drop to add the hornets.

Do you think the original rules are good? (they're what I'm currently using an they seem ok, but competatively I don't think they'd replace anything in the eldar book. Not that they'd have to be tourney competitive anyway, can't use them, and still picking up 3x)

As for those random rules...
OP compared to the eldar codex? Sure.
Any 5th ed book? Hardly
Just look at them compared to a vendetta for 130pts vs a Hornet with two pulse lasers for 100pts.

Both Fast Attack, scout, Fast skimmer, BS3, squadron.

Vendetta: 3x Twin-linked lascannons, 12AV, Transport capacity: 12, searchlight, extra armor, deep strike, Grav Chute Insertion

Hornet: 4x Missile launcher shots, 11AV, assault move, TL option.

Original Pulse laser hornet is 135pts.

All I hope for them is that they remove star-engines from the basic profile, make it an upgrade, and reduce the base price by 15pts.

The main difference (vendetta / hornet) is size. The hornet is smaller and lower to the ground making cover saves a possibility where if a vendetta never has cover. That's huge in 5th ed. I personally would run that sucker with 2 shuriken cannons and be done with it. 5 more points and its infinitely better than a vyper. I would use it in that type of role myself. Cock blocking movement with a nice sturdy scout is the way I'd use the hornet. A nice strength 6 weapon doesn't hurt either. That's just me though....
