i don't call girls mami b/c i called my mom mami when i was a kid. but i see the difference. if a girl calls me papi, depending on who it is, it's either really hot or kinda weird and ghetto.
if it feels too ghetto, i just do what everyone else does - i stab them and move on.
i am cuban but white people (read: not hispanic) are just not as close to one another. and there IS a difference if my g/f calls me papi vs. if my child called me papi. white people don't pick it up whereas we do.

I agree someone who says mami or papi to anyone but their parents is ghetto. I'm Cuban descent and I do not speak like that, unless I'm joking around.

is hard to explain a culture to someone that sees thing totally different. The word might be the same "papi" in this case, but the way you use it, the way you say it, and who you say it to makes all the difference.
