Favorite Board Game

Post by jerryb on Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:33 am

I'll start off with the following:

War of the Ring (not GW, but Fantasy Flight) I like the format and it got me interested in the GW version, which I believe is the best product they offer. Surprised?

Arkam Horror, I am a big fan of HP Lovecraft. One of the most interesting features is you can have just ONE player (I don't of any other game that does that). There are several expansions.

Muchkin, because it is fast easy and just pure fun.

There are others I would like to play, such as Twilight Imperuim, Iron Tide, Axis & Allies (any of the box sets).

Twilight Imperium with it's expansion is probably one of our groups favorites. Game has lots of optional rules that can make the game very different each time and it plays uniquely with different numbers of players. It's a long game though, one of those you have to set aside a whole day or night to just sit back and play leisurely, watching some movies, drinking some beers, whatever.

Formula D this oldie is just such a fun game. Simple mechanics but at the same time it has lot of strategy involved and it really plays great with lots of players. It's fast paced and always exciting with lots of risk taking on players parts.

Battlestar Galactica this newer game at first didn't seem like it was going to be all that hot being based on a TV show, you never know how licensed products end up. But the game is tons of fun especially if your familiar with the tone of the series. It's all about intrigue and not knowing who at the table you can trust. You have to work together as a group, while at the same time not trusting anyone. This game has brought us lots of fun with "twists". Favorite game I was the bad guy, yet someone else at the table was as well and he knew it, but he still framed me to further his own goals, until he was able to spring me from prison so we could wreck havoc on the humans Twisted Evil

I heard battlestar was really cool. I also heard that Shadows over Camelot is another game like that, where you have a traitor in your midst but don't know who the person is, until they reveal themselves.

Sounds like great fun.

With Battlestar you can potentially have multiple traitors in a group which is fun since you often get traitors trying to perform witch hunts on other potential traitors which causes all kinds of chaos.

Puerto Rico and Cuba are my favorites.
I also like Ra, Ticket to Ride, Union Pacific (out of print), Nexus Ops (out of print), St Petersburg, Carcassone, and Attila.

Arkham Horror is always good, and Battlestar Galactica is another fun game as well, with the first expansion altering things interestingly.

Other favourites of mine are:

Agricola Seems like a fairly dull game at first. Expand your farm, grow your family, keep them fed, wash, rinse, repeat. Then you get the improvement cards, and the occupation cards, and everything gets much more interesting...

Leader 1 Not only the best board game based on cycling, but one of the best racing games. Board made up of interchangable hexes, so lots of variety, and mechanisms that really make it feel like you're running a cycling team...

Kingmaker Well out of print, but a great simulation of the War of the Roses, focusing not on the kings and princes of the Houses of York and Lancaster, but on the Lords and families who were the real power at the time.

Betrayal At House on the Hill It's out of print, but it's fast, fun, super easy.

Descent and it's many expansions Talk about a ball buster! It's a really fun game, with some neat elements. Think of it as D&D Lite.

Arkham HorroR Damn if this game isn't hard! Our group played with 8 people one time and shit got outta control quick.

Arcana It's the latest game purchased and it's a gem! It's a four player card game made by AEG. Up to 4 players (minimum 2 , best with 3) Take control of a guild jockeying for control of a city. You have to acquire People, Land, and Resources within a variable time span. Once again it's fast, fun, and easy.

Can someone explain to me why games like Agricola, Puerto Rico, Settlers, and Carcassone are insanely popular on Boardgame geek .com. I mean I look at them and see intricate, interesting games but boring, none the less. When I want to play a board game, I don't want to play chess. I want to play a game with a lot of flavor.

Why are these games rated so high ?

Dunno, but I have to say, I own Carcassone and have yet to find anyone who wants to play it more than once. It's kind of...zzzz. But Settlers of Catan is a GREAT gateway game to get people out of the Monopoly/Clue/etc box. It's like a faster, more fun monopoly.

Been thinking the same thing for a bit now. I just can't picture trying to pitch a game to my buddies about farming.... The main thing a look for in a game is that it has a fair bit of "coolness" to it. Zombies. Check. Evil Wizards. Check. Occult Nazis. Check. Selling crops. Check?

Settlers of Catan is a really good game, especially if you add the Kinghts and Cities expansion.

This is a simulator for the basic game built by some guy at Northwestern U as part of his AI project. It's been running for years, is pretty popular, and safe to use.

Puerto Rico is kinda like running a Plantation in the South. Work those slaves and indentured servants. Its actually a fun game.
